What to Wear to Every Pre-Wedding Event

By the time the wedding arrives, most brides have had three or four other occasions where they were the centre of attention and had to decide what to wear. Each has a slightly different register, and getting them right is easier when you plan them together rather than one panicked outfit at a time.

The engagement party

The register: celebratory, but not yet bridal. This is the first event, and it is closer to a good party than to a wedding.

What works: a cocktail-length dress, a fluid midi, or a short dress with some sparkle. White is optional here and increasingly common, but it is not expected. Colour is entirely appropriate.

The one rule: do not out-dress your own wedding. Save the full bridal look — the veil, the ball gown, the drama — for the day itself.

The bridal shower

The register: daytime, softer, usually smaller. Often at someone's home or a restaurant, frequently photographed at close range.

What works: a white or pale midi dress, something with lace or a floral element, or a light two-piece. This is the event where white is most expected, and where a soft, pretty, unfussy dress does exactly the right job.

Chelsea — floral lace in a short length. Bridal enough for a shower, not so much that it competes with the wedding.

Practical note: you will likely be sitting for a long time, opening things, with people taking close photographs. Choose something comfortable to sit in and interesting at close range — texture and detail read better here than a dramatic silhouette.

The rehearsal dinner

The register: the most formal of the pre-wedding events, and the one immediately before the day. Usually evening, usually a restaurant or private room.

What works: a white or ivory cocktail dress, a short bridal dress, or an elegant column. This is where being clearly bridal is most appropriate, because it is the night before and everyone present is there for the wedding.

Practical note: think about what your wedding dress looks like, and choose something with a different silhouette. If your gown is a full ball gown, wear something sleek. If your gown is fitted, a fuller shape gives contrast across the two days' photographs.

The after-party

The register: late, loud, and about dancing.

What works: short, light and comfortable. Something you can genuinely move in and are not worried about. This is the event where a slightly more daring or a coloured dress makes sense.

Planning them as a set

Three principles make this much easier:

  1. Escalate. Engagement party the least bridal, rehearsal dinner the most, wedding day above all of them. Each step should feel like a progression.
  2. Vary the silhouette. Four white dresses in the same shape will look repetitive across the photographs, even months apart. Alternate fitted and full, short and long.
  3. Rewear where you sensibly can. Different guests attend different events. A dress worn at the engagement party is entirely rewearable at the after-party, and a bridal corset from a two-piece set can be styled several ways.

Accessories do a lot of the work

The same simple white dress reads completely differently with different accessories. A lace choker at the rehearsal dinner, long gloves at the engagement party, a short veil at the shower — one dress, three distinctly different photographs.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to my engagement party?

Something celebratory but not fully bridal — a cocktail-length dress, a fluid midi, or a short dress with some sparkle. White is optional and colour is entirely appropriate.

Should the bride wear white to her bridal shower?

It is the event where white is most expected, and a white or pale midi with lace or floral detail is a natural choice. It is not compulsory.

What should I wear to a rehearsal dinner?

The most formal of the pre-wedding events — a white or ivory cocktail dress, a short bridal dress or an elegant column. Choose a different silhouette from your wedding gown for contrast.

Can I wear the same dress to more than one pre-wedding event?

Yes, and it is sensible — different guests attend different events. Changing the accessories makes the same dress read quite differently in photographs.

How do I avoid all my pre-wedding outfits looking the same?

Vary the silhouette rather than just the dress: alternate fitted and full, short and long, and let the level of bridal detail escalate toward the wedding day.
