How Much Does a Handmade Wedding Dress Cost

How Much Does a Handmade Wedding Dress Cost — And Why

The price difference between a mass-produced wedding dress and a handmade one can be significant — and most brides, understandably, want to understand what they're actually paying for. Here's an honest breakdown.

Fabric

Quality bridal fabrics — French lace, silk mikado, fine chiffon — are expensive to source. A single gown can use 5–10 metres of fabric. The difference in material cost between a premium fabric and a cheap synthetic alternative is significant, and it's immediately visible in the finished dress.

Labour

A handmade wedding dress can take 80–150 hours of skilled work. Pattern making, cutting, basting, fitting, sewing, hand-finishing, quality checking. This labour is done by skilled dressmakers who have trained for years — not by machines in a factory producing hundreds of units per day.

Made-to-measure pattern work

For a dress made to your measurements, someone has to adjust the pattern specifically for your body before cutting begins. This takes additional time and expertise.

Embellishment

Hand-placed beading, lace appliqués, embroidery — these are done by hand, one bead or stitch at a time. A heavily beaded bodice can represent 20–30 hours of work on its own.

Fittings and adjustments

A bespoke process includes the designer's time for consultations, measurement sessions, and correspondence throughout production.
